The biggest reason why product development initiatives fail is because they are treated like any typical IT project. In doing so, companies adopt the wrong methodology or a one size fits all agile methodology, use ill-defined requirements, have inadequate understanding of the target audience and their usage scenarios, deploy the latest technology trends without understanding total cost of operation or ROI, and grossly miscalculate the cost of operations. We understand these reasons because we have successfully developed viable product business models for ourselves as well as several clients. Symphony’s software engineering services are meant to do one thing only – Clearly define & document the constructs of the product, its attributes, risks and constraints, business case, priorities, feature roadmap, compliance requirements, end user environment, requirements for value demonstration and future plans. The output of the product engineering service is to provide inputs for taking key decisions on product development initiatives such as:
- What product development process to deploy?
- What scope to limit the Proof of Concept & Concept testing?
- What designs to deploy (technical, user interface, integration, what level of customization to provision for the client / end user?)?
- What testing strategy to deploy?
- What methodologies to use for deployment and suppor?t
- What product maintenance strategies to be used?
- How to control product configuration and releases?
- How to minimize internal product development risks?
- What milestones are a priority and how to allocate resource optimally to meet the milestones?
- Most importantly, What resources to deploy?
Symphony deploys its seasoned team of software product development experts with extensive experience in developing and managing products for ISV’s using a variety of licensing and support models. The team is supplemented with industry specific subject matter experts to address key questions regarding business environments, usage scenarios and requirements to demonstrate value of the product to clients. The information also allows Symphony to propose the appropriate engagement model. |

| The scope of the POC varies depending on the type of product and the goals of the prototype. Symphony has extensive experience in meeting goals that include POC for angel funding, industry acceptance and peer review beta client approval, idea generation, road map development, detailed product specification gathering and focus group research. Speed of POC development is key. Symphony deploys its technology frameworks combined with usability engineering expertise and a SWAT team experienced in product development, to quickly develop the prototype that adequately illustrates the business case, functions and features and the intended value. The assignments are typically less than 3 months depending on the type of project. Symphony has access to a variety of subject matter experts and extensive network of end users across the healthcare, media and publishing, insurance and logistics industry that can either help develop, evaluate the prototype or guide testing the product concept to target end-users. |

The success of products depends upon four critical design factors: a scalable data model, easy to use user interface, and scalable back-end architecture, and low cost hosting and maintenance infrastructure. Symphony’s product architects live and breathe this environment, and help you answer very important questions like - Can we develop the whole product using open source LAMP technologies? Can we use open source applications for content management? Should we buy or build our front end user interface controls? Can we leverage mash-ups for specific functions? Will best of breed approach increase the total cost of ownership?
Symphony deploys its Key Compromise & Constrain (KCC) index that assigns risks, costs, and benefits to the design decisions so that the design decisions are tested and validated to meet the business goals. More importantly as a product owner you have a transparent view into the rationale of the design and more importantly, can accurately calculate the cost of operations and cost of growth. Product design is also more than just user interface design. The product needs to fit well into the ecosystem that it is going to be deployed in. It should be able to clearly show benefits and ROI, while making it easy for the user. Our team of industrial engineers and designers analyze the entire user scenario and identify key workflows. The development takes place after the workflows have been understood and optimized and the end user interactions have been researched for the desired response. |

| Symphony’s accelerated development process is a Hybrid approach that blends best practices of several SDLC’s to ensure success of the product development. The core philosophy of the accelerated development approach is to ensure that a working product with tangible functionality gets in the hand of the end users. Depending on the requirements and product design, the development team will choose from a variety of proven options available to them, including: using Symphony’s technology frameworks, implementing third party components and frameworks, mash-up of existing components or developing functionalities from scratch. Each decision is analyzed for total cost of ownership, time for development, and cost of quality. Our product development team that has extensive experience in each of the options, implements the chosen approach and meets the product development goals. Symphony has created working prototypes in less than 30 days for high- transaction web portals. |

| Testing & quality assurance can be the difference between success and failure of product launch. Symphony works with the product owners to identify the true cost of quality (COQ). COQ is often misunderstood; it stands for the cost of NOT creating a quality product or service. This analysis helps the owner identify the areas that can be compromised and where it cannot. Symphony deploys its quality assurance team to identify critical features that effect the total cost of quality and analyze risks associated with the features. The team then assigns the features to different configuration groups based on criticality and risk. Different quality assurance techniques such as black-box testing, regression testing, smoke testing, are deployed to each of the configuration boxes. The deliverables that are (QA Plan, Test Plan, Configuration Management Plan, Test Scenarios and Test Cases) are used throughout the lifecycle of the product. |
